Brad from Lexington, KyThis is far and away my favorite RHCP. It's like anthony kiedis is singing right to you, and it's from the heart too. Caitlyn from Royersford, Pai love this song so much that i even tear up hearing it sometimes. Michael from Deridder, LaI remember when i was on a camping trip.my friend jacob was screwing around with my radio and woke me.didn't move at all.said nothing.then this song came on and i started singing and humming along to it.my favorite part was when Kiedis starts speeding up his words and i just sang along subconciously.and perfectly.(it surprised jacob, too, he's like: "Michael? You awake?" lololol). I figure the decision by Rick Rubin must have been that there didn't need to be 2 so similar ballads on the album.įurthermore, I'd also like to mention that Scar Tissue and By the Way also used similar chord progressions and I've also spotted it in Waterloo Sunset by the kinks. The song's chord progress is F, C, Dm, A# and F, C, Dm, Am, A# - which is the same chord progression as Under the Bridge but the key is a semi-tone up. Ian from Manchester, United KingdomMy theory for why this song was left off the album, which is it's similarity to Under the Bridge. There are some similarities but they disguise them so well that it doesn't even sound like the same form. As for Scar Tissue, that uses F, C, Dm, and By the Way uses F, C, Am. Matt from South AustraliaThis song uses the four chords (F, C, Dm, A#), and literally hundreds of songs use this, I think Snow does as well as Under Bridge. I believe Ione’s parents had a place there that they would allow her and Anthony to stay whenever they wanted, but I also think he still continued to go to Mexico even after they broke up when he needed to get away from L.A. Anthony used to stay in Mexico to detox and kick heroin when he wanted to quit using. “Where I go I just don’t know, I might end up somewhere in Mexico” is a very straight forward lyric. It’s not good for him, but the high makes him feel so good, and he’s always coming back for it. The lines from “It’s bitter baby, and it’s very sweet” to “I be coming back baby, I be coming back for more” is him describing what the addiction is like. An example of this would be his ex girlfriend Ione Skye, who tried so hard to take care of him during his times of hard addiction, but he would often ditch her and disappear for days on a drug binge, unable to give any effort to their relationship. “When I find my peace of mind, I’m gonna give you some of my good time.” This line references the fact that his using has caused him to be extremely insensitive to the people around him. The way he describes these nightmares sounds haunting, and he says that they symbolize the evil and the greed that manifests in him when he is not sober. (Insanity because typically relapses can be defined as doing something over and over again, while expecting different results each time.) “The angels in my dreams have turned to demons of greed, that’s me.” This line is chilling because in Kiedis’ autobiography Scar Tissue, he explains that he used to have nightmares of demonic figures that looked exactly like himself trying to control him and convince him that he would never get better from his addiction. Insanity it seems has got me by my soul to squeeze.” Addiction is referred to both as a disease and a form of insanity. “I’ve got a bad disease, from my head is where I bleed.
We can dissect this song by most of the lyrics. Natalie from GeorgiaThis song is about his drug addiction.Sk8rchild from Etown, Ab This song is written about Anthony’s father.
It is without a doubt the soundtrack of my life. Theoddman from NorwayI have suffered through years of light substance abuse and several periods of depression, caused by childhood trauma combined with a bipolar disorder. And you can feel both the pain and the hopefulness to it. So many different beautifully woven textures to this song. Rhcpfan76 from Connecticut I can get so lost in this song, the lyrics, the guitar, and that dreamy bass playing by Flea.
